It happens like clockwork. After my youngest kiddo leaves for school, I let out a big sigh of relief. Accomplishing that task, launching four children into their school day, is quite an accomplishment in and of itself. When they were little, we spent time snuggling under quilts reading books, now I spend time packing lunches and carpooling them to basketball and cross country practice.

I sometimes get caught up in my own life that I forget how important my time is to my children. I seem to value the wrong things, like grading papers for school, folding the laundry, or even writing this column. Well, I had a minor fender bender last night. I feel as stupid as a slug under a rock for having hit the car in front of me as I skidded to a stop at the red light. It was totally my fault and I have no good reason for causing the accident other than I was driving home after a twelve hour work day, exhausted, and apparently not as focused as I should have been behind the wheel.

I have been through oodles of back to school seasons, seventeen of my own, and eleven of my children’s. Each one bringing its own panic attack of excitement mixed with complete and utter fear of what lies ahead.
